Lightning Rods

They say that lightning strikes the tallest thing in the area. In most cases that turns out to be a tree or building. In order to eliminate lightning strikes to buildings people used to place "lightning rods" on the tops of their homes, tall barns, and commercial buildings. A ground cord was attached to the lightning rod and ran to the ground to send the electrical current in the lightning strike to the ground. Must have worked o.k. because there were thousands of them sold and erected. These in the picture are on an old coungtry store near Natchitoches, Louisiana. Out west, people in yesteryear put them on everything highter than a nats leg because lightning was so fast and furious out there.
