Door Latches

A door latch is a simple thing, but has an important function. It is one of preventing entry by unwanted people or animals. The one in the photo is a big one that was common back in plantation times. Most of them were made by a blacksmith on the plantation or in the local area. Since they were made of metal, they lasted a very long time. This one is over 150 year old and still doing its job. They seemed to all be black and never painted over, oiled, or protected by any coating. Guess that's a good thing because people had little money for such thing back then.
