Hard Times

The Great Depression was bad for everyone. People lived as best they could. Clothes were few, food was scarce, and housing was meager (see photo). The policy for survival was: if it breaks, fit it...........if if wears out mend it..........if it can be made at home, do it.......................if you can do without it, do it.
People got by with a home garden, harvesting fish and wildlife, forageing for food like blackberries, possum grapes, wild bee honey, muscidines, mayhaws, etc. Clothes were hand-me-downs until they were treadbare, then they were used to make quilts.
It was rough.
