Rural Country Stores

The old rural country store served people for a long time. By the 1970's most of them were gone. They were usually located in small pockets of populations or at crossroads serving several small pockets. They carried a wide variety of goods such as work gloves, small hardware tiems, household goods, tobacco, snack foods, staple goods, and many other items in demand. During yesteryear, transportation was mostly animal drawn wagons, so having a store close by was very important. These stores were also social places where the latest news (gossip) was shared. There, people saw other people that they might not otherwise see for a long time. Games such as checkers, cards, and dominoes were also played for hours. It was also the unofficial gathering place for "the whittling" club. It wouldn't do to tell all the yarns told at these old places.

They are gone.................but not forgotten.
