The Great Depression
The stock market crash in 1929 sent the U.S. economy into a tail spin. That single activity pushed America into a 10 year depression of great magnitude. Jobs dried up, food was scarce, and money was very hard to come by.
In an attempt to help people, the U. S. government organized the "Federal Surplus Commodities Corp". Certain foods were sent ot citizens for their families. The photo you see was a box containing prunes. The number of boxes that a family could get was based on family size. There was no charge for the food. It was received with thanksgiving. Most people survived with a combination of commodities, a garden, raising animals, and killing wild animals. It was a tough existence.
