The Cattle Gap
The invention is also called the "cattle guard". Once plentiful in agricultural areas, they are used less and less as time goes by. It was designed to keep livestock in a given area. The gap was convenient and longer lasting than a typical gate or fence. They were usually made of steel. The bars were spaced just wide enough that level footing was impossible for animals. Because of this, animals did not attempt to wonder off the property. Livestock that did not belong in a particular field could not enter because of the gap. It was an ingenious idea that served a very useful purpose.
