The Metal Lunch Box
Metal lunch boxes were very common until around the 1970's. Men and women who worked in factories, the woods, and in oil fields were a long way from home at noon, so they carried their lunch in the metal lunch box. In the top of the box there was a small thermos for coffee or hot soup. Metal boxes offered more protection for the contents than a paper sack, so they were the container of choice.
A typical lunch would be a piece of fruit, nuts, two sandwiches and a sweet of some kind. During the summer, fresh tomatoes were included. Other items might be fried chicken, homemade biscuits, bacon strips, or sausage patties. Metal lunch boxes were available at hardware, grocery, and feed and seed stored back then.
