Early Style Duck Decoys

Whereever you find duck hunters, you find duck decoys. Some of the early decoys were little more than floating cypress knees or pieces of wood that were about the size of a duck. Then a few ambitious people started rough carving the wood to look a little more like a real duck. Other hunters sawed out pieces of wood that resembled a duck head, and attached it to the floating body.

The demand for duck decoys became so great that commercial firms began to turn them out in significant numbers. These decoys were uniform in size and shape and actually looked like ducks. They were made of various types of materials including wood and cork. These decoys had strings attached to weights that did a better job of keeping the decoys in the pattern desired by the hunter. Without them the decoys were subject to drifting out of formation by force of wind.

There has been quite a transition in decoy production from the early 1900's until today. Duck hunters now have decoys made of much more durable materials.
