Gas lanterns have been in use in cities for many years. Their charm and soft light are the things that stories are written about. At one time, many eastern cities had a person who was hired to light the lanterns each night. He was called "the lamp lighter". There was even a song written about that person called "The Old Lamp Lighter". The lights served the same purposes back then that street lights do today.........elumination for safety and navigation of traffic. Today these lanterns are mostly for decoration or used in historic districts.
