Cane Bottom Chairs

Back in time, furniture was often simple, handcrafted, and inexpensive. That was because of necessity. One of the most common chairs back then was the straight back wood chair with either a cowhide or cane bottom. A lot of homes had both types. As time went by, the cane used for the chair's bottom would loose its strength and begin to sag in the middle. Given a little more time, the cane along the outside borders would dry out and break. One by one, they would break uhtil people were either afraid to sit in the chair or someone would repair it. Cane bottom chairs made fine looking furniture. They were light weight, durable (the wood part), inexpensive, and readily available at hardware and feed and seed stores.
