Mankind has always tried to invent new ways of creating music. Even new sounds, that weren't exactly music, but contributed to the beat and rhytum of music were readily accepted. One such introduction to this effort was the playing of spoons. Just take two spoons and beat them together with you hands or on your knee and you had a sound that contributed to the beat of a particular song. The photo shows two boys playing spoons and a banjo. A person who was good at playing spoons was always welcome to play at home and barn dances.
