
You couldn't go to a lumberyard and buy big dimentional post and poles back in early times. In fact, in most locations there weren't any lumberyards with a two day ride. That being the case, people simply hand hewed out large pieces of wood like posts, logs, and poles. The photo shows a porch pillar. If you look closely you can see the axe hack markes on the post. It was hard work that required a rhytum with the axe to made the axe marks fall in unison with the previous hack. It took a lot of energy, so kids couldn't do this job. It was mens work.
