Salt and pepper shakers are items that almost everyone had back in yesteryear. However, they usually were "make do" kinds of items. You always put a little rice in the salt shaker to soak up the moisture and keep the salt grainular. A person certainly didn't spend any serious money on salt and pepper shakers unless you were the master of "The Big House". If you were, then everything you owned was something that was hopefully one-up on your neighbors item of like kind. So you see, human nature hasn't changed a bit. We all want to the king of the hill in everything we have.......
